Have you set out your shoes??

Most people think St. Nick comes on December 24th, but in our house he comes tonight. December 6th is St. Nicholas Day, and tonight he’ll be sneaking into houses everywhere to leave trinkets and treats in children’s shoes.

One of our family’s very favorite Advent traditions is celebrating St. Nicholas Day. Dear friends of ours have an annual family tradition consisting of a puppet show that tells the story of St. Nicholas and Black Peter (who isn’t very PC these days, but somehow we manage to tell the story every year without being arrested). We’re not very fond of the Black Peter who hauls children off in bags and beats them (who is??). No, this Black Peter makes us all laugh until we cry, and then he hands out small gifts from St. Nicholas to the kiddos.

Now as if all that wasn’t enough, after the puppet show we all congregate in the kitchen and make homemade doughnuts and apple cider. This year, we even had some gluten-free/allergen-free “doughnut” options for those of us on special diets. We experimented with deep-fried mochi, which was pretty successful. Really, you could deep fry a tennis shoe and roll it in cinnamon and sugar, and I’d still probably eat it.

Here, some of the joy and laughter of our St. Nicholas celebration…

Ready for the show…

Gifts that delight…

Homemade doughnuts…

And some allergen-friendly treats, too…

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night….
